BINDAAS BANDS
Souled out on metal

Prior to the concert, the very name 'Souled-out' rang bells in the mind, saying it could just be another fancy name chosen by its band members. But in a tete-a-tete with its members, one realises that there's something more to them beyond their music too.

Casually dressed in Tees and faded jeans, these 20-something college kids chatted about their interesting journey into forming the band and deciding what music they should play, who was adept at what instrument, etc.

At the Unwind Centre in Wilson Gardens, it was going to be yet another jam session, to play what they always wanted to play.

The band members are: Ashutosh (lead guitarist), Akhilesh (base guitar), Kiren (drums), Rajiv (leads and rhythm) and Sai (vocals).

Semantics behind 'Souled-out'... Basically, it means playing music that reverberated from our souls. We liked playing serious themes which reflect reality and the world which we are living in. So that kind of suited our name.

Your musical journey... We began a three-member band about six months ago. Then, we realised that we needed a vocalist and a drummer. So, we posted an ad for a vocalist on the Freedom Jam website and Sai contacted us immediately. Kiren joined us and we all became a team.

You specialise in... Death metal, hard rock and trash metal.

Where you’ve jammed so far.... Freedom Jams and Campus Rock (and now at the Unwind Centre, Wilson Garden)

In your free time, you play... Generally at a friend's house.

What sets you apart from other bands... Our themes are all based on serious issues and we like to play music which is based on retribution, blind faith and wars.

Apart from this, we love to play a lot of death and trash metal. We write our own lyrics and play by them.

We also have four originals other than playing cover songs of international bands.

Your future plans... Cutting an album and continue jamming!

Priya Rajendran
